There are many reasons why so many people return to the Three
Valleys year after year. The 600km of groomed and interlinking
pistes; 200 ski lifts and 10,000 hectares of off-piste heaven
are just some. In short, it is the world’s largest linked
ski area and Courchevel 1850 sits prettily at the top of the
‘first’ valley.
On the mountain there are restaurants to suit all budgets,
which put other resorts to shame. In the village there is
a lively après-ski atmosphere with plenty of bars and
clubs to keep the night owls busy. Courchevel’s sympathetic
architecture and beautiful setting is in pleasant contrast
to the concrete jungles seen elsewhere, while the resort’s
altitude gives rise to its excellent snow record.
Set at the top of the Courchevel valley the
skiing possibilities are almost endless. Lunch in Val Thorens
at the furthest end of the 3 Valleys, Mont Vallon on the way
back, and a fortifying drink at the Pierres Plats before the
last schuss home? Speeding through the trees to La Tania down
Folyères (a sweeping blue run that makes any skier
feel like Hermann Maier!)? Or simply a sunny afternoon’s
cruising in Courchevel 1650? Whether you are a beginner or
an expert, this is truly a resort for everyone.
The eating experiences to be had in Courchevel
1850 itself are unsurpassed anywhere in the Alps. With over
20 restaurants serving everything from traditional Savoyard
fare such as tartiflette, fondue and raclette, to seafood;
Italian and even Chinese, there is something to suit every
palate. Most of the hotels will also take bookings for their
frequent gourmet evenings.
All of this, together with the numerous other
activities, for both skiers and non-skiers alike, combine
to make Courchevel not only arguably France’s premier
ski resort, but also a European gem.
If you haven’t been – treat yourself
and come and see why all those people return. Otherwise -
welcome back! |
